Exercycles: some buying advice
The resistance system
The resistance of exercycles is produced by an interaction between a flywheel mass and a braking system. The flywheel mass provides a concentric run: generally, the bigger the mass the smoother the pedalling motion. Some home fitness machines have a lighter flywheel – here a smoother concentric run can be generated through a higher rotation speed. There are exercise bikes with different braking systems — i.e., a shoe brake as on a bicycle. Here, extremely high resistance forces can be produced though the wear is higher. Finer adjustments are possible with a magnetic braking system. The flywheel mass and brake do not touch each other, so there is nearly no wear from proper use.
